Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Groups

It's important to note that CISM is not counselling; instead, it is a confidential, voluntary, and educational process often referred to as "psychological first aid."

Originally developed for military combat veterans and later adapted for civilian first responders, CISM can be applied in various settings whenever there's a need to address the impact of trauma in people's lives. For instance, CISM groups are often helpful for families after the loss of a loved one.

CISM is a formal and highly structured intervention protocol designed specifically for handling traumatic events. It is a professionally recognized process that helps individuals involved in a critical incident share their experiences, express their emotions, learn about stress reactions and symptoms, and receive referrals for further assistance.

Several types of CISM interventions can be used depending on the situation.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

This group meeting or discussion addresses a particularly distressing critical incident. It aims to alleviate the impact of the incident and support your group in recovering from the associated stress. Ideally, the debriefing should be conducted within 24 to 72 hours after the incident, although it may occur later under exceptional circumstances.

Critical Incident Stress Defusing

Critical Incident Stress Defusing is the shorter, less formal version of a debriefing best conducted within 12 hours after the incident. Like a debriefing, it is an opportunity for your group to learn about stress, share reactions to an incident and vent emotions. The primary purpose is to stabilize people affected by the incident so they can return to regular routines.

This is a structured session following death and assists people in understanding their grief reactions as well as creating a healthy environment of openness and dialogue around the circumstances of the death.

Pre-Crisis Workshop (COMING SOON)

Pre-Crisis Workshop is a structured workshop providing your group with a proactive foundation for CISM services. It includes topics such as incident awareness and crisis response strategies and develops stress management coping skills that can prevent significant problems should an incident occur.
